Unfree Free Time (Bike Rental) 2026

For Greater New York 2026 at MoMA PS1, I installed a bike rack in the museum lobby. For five consecutive days each month, a delivery bike belonging to Gustavo Ajche, a leader of Los Deliveristas Unidos, is locked to the rack. He is compensated at $22.13 per hour, which is New York City's minimum pay rate for app-based delivery workers, for every hour his bike remains at the museum. When he returns to work every 22 minutes and 13 seconds, the absence of his bike triggers a chime that reproduces the order alerts of Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Grubhub throughout the space. The title of the work identifies the reality of flexible contract labor: time that is nominally free but actually governed by surveillance, algorithmic management, and the persistent anticipation of the next order. The exhibition thus serves as an occasion for informal paid leave, insufficient and temporary, and as a mechanism for redirecting institutional funds toward the labor that underpins it.
